Rosenburg, Texas, where neighborhoods are shaped by wide skies and warm evenings, the Amandera Community Center was envisioned as more than an amenity complex. It was imagined as the community's front porch. Developed through joint venue between Tri Pointe Homes and Taylor Morrison, the projects centers on fostering connection through thoughtful design, natural materials, and inviting outdoor spaces.
From the beginning, the vision was to create a porch like culture, a place where daily routines blend with spontaneous gathering, and where architecture and landscape work together to bring people outside.
The site unfolds as a layered experience. Pickleball and tennis courts energize the edges, while the pool shimmers beneath the shade pavilions on the other side. A natural playground encourages imaginative play through organic forms and textured materials. Meandering walking trails weave throughout the property, passing native gardens. Future trails will extend around the lake, offering peaceful loops along the water's edge. Anchoring everything is a very large green event lawn in the center, an expansive, flexible space designed to host festivals, farmer's markets, movie nights, and everyday play.
At the heart of the design stands the recreation center, composed of three distinct buildings arranged in a quadrangle around the event lawn. This layout creates a sense of enclosure without isolation, each building, contributing to a cohesive whole while encouraging movement, visibility, and interaction across the lawn.
Sketching
The concept design underwent multiple iterations to seamlessly integrate the amenity center into the site's curved layout, all while adhering to fire hose layout requirements.
To achieve a building that follows the site's curvature, the architecture team proposed the use of insulated concrete forms. This approach not only supports the curve design but also allows for a wider structure, without higher costs of steel structure. However, the fire hose lay constraints still proposed a challenge that still needed to be resolved while maintaining adequate space for the event lawn.
The next design iteration positioned the linear building along the parking lot, which successfully accommodates the client's requested programs while preserving space for the event lawn. However, this layout failed to highlight the site's natural curvature and quickly become too elongated for the site. It also continued to pose challenges for the fire hose lay requirements.
The next iteration, the team proposed breaking the program into three separate buildings arranged in a quadrangle around the event lawn. This layout preserved the event lawn and allowed for the creation of fire lanes within the site to meet fire hose lay requirements. However, this design ultimately compromised the site's available space, especially with the Meeting building located at the lower end of the event lawn.
The last iteration, the team located the Meeting building along the parking lot to reduce the length of the fire lanes. By locating the Meeting building along the parking lot, this allows for the patio to seamlessly flow into the event lawn for all the outdoor events. The Design
The Fitness Building: This building features a spacious gym with a high ceiling and expansive windows offering views of the pool and the event lawn. A kid's playroom is integrated into the space, allowing residents to work out while their kids play nearby. There are also climate-controlled restrooms serving both the pool and gym.
The Meeting Building: The central building offers a flexible meeting space on one side that can seat up to 180 people and a game room on the other. It includes a serving area suitable for catered events. The building also includes family restrooms and storage space for the event furniture and equipment.
The Office Building: This building contains an office space for the HOA and event manager, additional storage, and a family restroom serving the nearby courts. Under the same roof, the building also includes a covered pavilion that includes a fireplace for seasonal comfort. It's Built!
