The City of Pearland is making renovations to Hickory Slough, expanding an existing sportsplex to better support both users and operations. The project builds on the park’s original framework by expanding the number of fields, restrooms, and concessions. There will also be a new maintenance facility to support long-term operations.

Existing Conditions and Opportunities

Building on the broader master plan, the project implements the next phase of expansion, including doubling the number of fields with support facilities (restrooms, concessions, and operational spaces) scaled accordingly.

Rather than starting over, the design builds directly on the existing framework. This includes expanding key amenities, upgrading the concession building, and activating the second half of the set-aside land. Existing unconditioned buildings became a key focus, requiring upgrades that improve performance while maintaining what’s familiar.

Working Within The System

This project is as much about alignment as it is about design. The new maintenance building (2,915 SF) is ground-up construction, but it’s not reinventing the wheel. It’s based on a City of Pearland reference project to create consistency in how parks are maintained and supported across the system.

At the same time, the broader Unified Development Code influenced site decisions, including rotating the maintenance building to align with larger planning goals. These layers of input shaped a design process that prioritized coordination and fit over standalone expression.

The Design Approach

The architectural response is intentionally straightforward, consistent with the existing park buildings in scale, material, and overall character. The goal wasn’t to introduce something new, but to make the additions feel like they’ve always been part of the park.

The real complexity shows up in the details. Retrofitting the concession building into a conditioned space required a careful, technical approach. This means wrapping and insulating an existing structure that wasn’t designed for it, while integrating new program elements like restrooms, storage, and support space.

Similarly, the restroom expansion focused on scaling capacity to match the increased field count. The result is doubling usability while maintaining a cohesive relationship with the original building.
